Safe, Effective, Stress-Free Dental Care for Kids
At Sleepy Smiles Dental, we understand that some children need a little extra help to receive the dental care they need. For children who are very young, anxious, have special needs, or require complex procedures, general anesthesia offers a safe and effective solution.

What Is General Anesthesia?
General anesthesia is a controlled state of unconsciousness used during dental treatment.
It ensures your child is completely asleep, does not feel pain, and has no memory of the procedure.
It is administered by a licensed and trained anesthesiologist in a safe, hospital-grade setting.
When Is General Anesthesia Recommended?
We may recommend general anesthesia for children who:
- Have extensive dental decay requiring multiple treatments
- Are very young and unable to sit still for long procedures
- Experience severe dental anxiety or fear
- Have special healthcare needs or behavioral challenges
- Need surgical dental treatments like extractions, frenectomy, or impacted tooth exposure
- Have had unsuccessful attempts at dental treatment in the regular dental chair
The General Anesthesia Process – Step by Step
Initial Evaluation
Pre-Operative Instructions
Day of Procedure
- You and your child will be welcomed by our friendly team.
- The anesthesiologist will review your child’s health and explain the anesthesia process again.
- Your child will be gently administered anesthesia via inhalation (mask) or IV.
During the Procedure
- Your child will be fully asleep and continuously monitored by the anesthesiology team.
- Our pediatric dentist will perform all necessary dental treatments during this time, including fillings, extractions, or surgical procedures.
Recovery Room
- After the procedure, your child will be moved to a recovery area where they are closely monitored until they wake up.
- Most children wake up within 30–60 minutes, feeling groggy but not in pain.
- Our team will provide aftercare instructions, dietary guidelines, and medication if needed.
Post-Operative Care
- A follow-up call or visit is scheduled to ensure proper healing.
- Children typically recover within a day, though drowsiness or mild nausea is common for a few hours.
